BetterJoy Not Detecting Joy-Con or Pro Controller: 7 Proven Fixes

1. Run BetterJoy as Administrator

BetterJoy requires low-level hardware communication privileges to hook Bluetooth stacks and inject virtual XInput devices into the operating system. Right-click BetterJoyForCemu.exe and choose Run as administrator. To make this permanent, right-click > Properties > Compatibility tab > Check "Run this program as an administrator".

2. Reinstall the ViGEmBus Virtual Gamepad Driver

If BetterJoy launches but displays an error or fails to create virtual controller inputs, the ViGEmBus driver is typically corrupted or outdated:

1. Navigate to the Drivers subfolder inside your BetterJoy installation directory.
2. Run ViGEmBusSetup_x64.exe.
3. Select Repair or Uninstall, restart your PC, and then run the installer again to complete a clean installation.

3. Remove and Re-Pair Bluetooth Devices

Corrupted Bluetooth cache files in Windows often prevent controllers from communicating with BetterJoy:

1. Open Windows Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices.
2. Find Joy-Con (L), Joy-Con (R), or Pro Controller, click the three dots, and select Remove device.
3. Turn off your PC Bluetooth for 10 seconds, then toggle it back on.

If you connect your Nintendo Switch Pro Controller via USB-C cable rather than Bluetooth, ensure you are using a data-sync USB-C cable rather than a charge-only cord. Try connecting directly to a rear motherboard USB 3.0 port instead of front-panel hubs.

6. Verify HidHide and Controller Exclusive Mode

If your game receives double-clicks or erratic button presses, install HidHide (available in the BetterJoy drivers bundle) to hide the original DirectInput device from games, ensuring only the virtual Xbox controller created by BetterJoy is visible.
